The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol - Red Hot Soul
Whether she is singing the classic ‘Throw It Away,’ a tribute to Ancestor Animata Moseka, ‘Willow Weep for Me,’ ‘It’s Tough Being Green,’ or any number of jazz, soul, and blues renditions, Faye Carol is intense, investing her lyrics with her life and what it is about in the moment.
And this past June 10th, Carol’s performance at the Black Repertory Theater in Berkeley was no different.
Her red hot soul fundraising concert for the Music In The Community organization she has founded and grown like Tupac’s ‘Rose That Grew From Concrete’ combined her student’s powerful one woman play taking us to the roots of courage and tradition by expressing the truth that true Black Woman / Manhood has not left us; Miss Carol’s voice blended soul, jazz, blues and funk with the greatest of ease.
Faye spoke of respecting and of teaching Black youth. She spoke of respecting Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She spoke of growth and of truth.
She took her shoes off. And got comfortable. And folded all of this understanding and knowledge into our lives; poured it out through a microphone, giving us the warmth we needed that had nothing to do with the temperature outside the door.
And into this space freely given, the audience returned its appreciation.
Spirits lifted as she sang this infusion into her music; minds cleared, hearts beat stronger and to surer rhythms than they did perhaps when they came into the show.
Backed by the stellar performances of Marco Casasola on piano, Marcus Shelby on bass, Geechi Taylor on drums, and Howard Wiley on saxophone, the dynamic Faye Carol continued her timeless tradition of giving, and making all better by her presence. She sizzled red-hot soul with the greatest of ease, transforming two shows into standing ovation fusion while rocking the House of Birel L. Vaughn, Berkeley’s own Black Repertory Theater in Berkeley – yet again. Brava Miss Carol!
